He quickly turned this into a new weaponized military force which could never be defeated. I figured Wow! This one going to get some reactions. But actually there seemed to be very little. I don't know if everyone thought it was over the top... or maybe everyone agreed.

Rush is a unique combination of hilarious entertainer and excellent news analyst. I wrote and recorded commercials, many of which were pretty darn wacky. So I love radio and very, very few have used the medium as expertly as Rush. And you're right that Rush's loudest critics are all people who never actually listen to him. I think they'd shrivel up like salted slugs.

@TrickyRicky- I think a yuge part of Trump's success comes down to the fact that he isn't Obama. Trump could almost (but not quite) be a cipher and we'd still see much of the magic happening. That being said, it is always refreshing to feel like we've got a President who actually loves America and Americans for a change.

@Dan- Mark Steyn is far and away my favorite fill-in host for the show. A great mind and a great wit.

@Mike aka Proof- Yep.

@Pete (Detroit)- I agree that some of those update themes ran way too long and could get too repetitive. But it was an allowable sin.

@John the Econ- As usual, your points are spot on.

@Dick Paetzke- I very much believe in the "team" concept when it comes to advancing conservatism with humor. And in Rush's world, I'm happy just to be a waterboy.

Thanks for the good wishes on my health. I'm still having weird twitches and tics, albeit significantly reduced at night and now, sporadically, during the day. After $9k of tests, the consensus seems to be "we don't know what it is, but it doesn't seem likely to kill you. Let's wait and see." But all in all, I'm doing fine.

@Sortahwitte- I heartily agree that the Dems should keep parading their dimmest, dumbest, and most strident in public. As John the Econ is wont to say, "Do you want more Trump? Because this is how you get more Trump."

@Fred Ciampi- It's humbling and inspiring to see the remains of our service people coming back to American soil, and Trump deserves a world of credit. I compare that to Obama and Hillary standing with the flag-draped coffins of those who died in Benghazi, and lying their asses off to the American people and the families of the fallen. The rat bastards.

@James Daily- Thanks for the additional history!

@Shelly- I can't even imagine what today's America would be like without Rush. Actually, the thought is scary enough that I don't want to dwell on it. But I completely agree that one of the great things about Rush is that he entertains and educates, but he doesn't try to make people angry. Who could listen to that every day? Rather, he shares his positive attitude and gives ALL of us strength by showing the opposition to be laughable (albeit dangerous).

@Geoff King- Great! He keeps me grounded when I begin to despair. I think it was getting rid of the so-called Fairness Doctrine that opened the door for Rush who led the charge of conservative talk radio. He is the maestro and I dearly love him. There is a reason Air America and other liberal talk radio fail. They cannot discuss anything because they have no argument and just resort to ad hominems. Not a way to entertain for sure. I love the way Rush talks to liberal callers. He calmly sets them straight but is respectful in doing so. That totally disarms them.

As far as Barky is concerned, I'm thrilled he is back on the campaign trail. He has a dismal track record with respect to that. KLIF was singing the blues asking everyone to call, write, holler to keep Rush there. We didn't care Who carried him, we just wanted him - and got him in Real Time. Big deal. Now, as an aside, I remember the very first Rush show I listened to, 2 hours, on a Saturday when he came onto 1190. I was doing my job and he started talking about everything I believed and it wasn't PC. I said to myself, "OMG, they are going to kill this guy!" We conservatives kept a very low profile and where I worked was I was surrounded by militant liberals. Of course, I had a 1-year old daughter at the time so wasn't doing a lot of radio listening.

@Mike aka Proof- Ah yes, Morton Downey, Jr! I was trying to think of him when coming up with Joe Pyne's name, but had a brain freeze. And you make a very amusing point that it may have been political correctness which gave us Rush!

@Regnad Kcin- Rush's show would never have lasted if he weren't whip smart and always, always coming at things from a unique perspective. How the man keeps his content fresh for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week is a marvel. And I think he's defined the perils of liberalism more accurately (and humorously) than anyone else.

@REM1875- Oh yeah, WBAP had/has a strong signal. And you're right that Rush tends to at least air the opposition's points, if only to more effectively ridicule them.

And I have to laugh about your comment regarding Mariachi bands. When I spin through the radio dial here in the Dallas metroplex, it sounds like I'm pulling in shortwave radio.

@Geoff King- You say that Rush's show isn't free via the Internet, but have you tried services like "I Heart Radio?" I've got several Amazon Echo devices (I'm actually too boring to worry about being spied on) and they happily play Rush's show. If you have such a device, just enable the "WBAP skill" and say "Alexa, play WBAP" whenever Rush is on.

@D.A. Davis- Ah, the forbidden fruit of Rusty Warren's "Knockers Up!" I miss the days when "dirty stuff" was still just that, instead of the default setting for most people's conversations (and behaviors).

@L.C.Clower- I read your comment in Rush's voice. And yes, Rush pulls people in quickly and then hangs on to them. Like coffee, he's an addiction I don't mind having.

@Judi King- Barry is still relevant to the extent that a lot of lamebrains still worship him, despite growing empirical evidence that his time in office was a wall to wall disaster.

@Ad Validator- Rush is best on radio, but I loved seeing that video clip of "Crying Clinton" again! Thanks for sharing!

@Snark- I find that I have only limited tolerance for voices more strident than Rush's, even if they're making perfectly legitimate points. I think that's one of his great strengths.

@Casey Carney- Even though Rush has discontinue some classic bits, it seems like he always have plenty of new stuff on tap.

@Tots- You're right, our stories are very similar. I didn't expect Rush to change my mind and perspective on all things political, but he certainly did. My first thought was "My God! How did this kind of honestly conservative content ever make it on the air?"

Actually, there's probably only one reason he did: AM radio at the time was somewhere between dying and dead. By the late '80s, almost all music programming had migrated to the FM band, largely stimulated by better quality audio becoming standard in cars and the introduction of the Sony Walkman and other high-fidelity portable devices. This left AM with little more than news, sports, and highly dull and conformist local political talk. Had the AM band been thriving and profitable, it's highly unlikely that Rush would have had a chance. But the owners and program managers of dying stations were ready and willing to try anything, even if he did offend their political sensibilities.

The easy money they subsequently made changed their minds quickly.

I had almost forgotten about Airhead America, that embarrassing attempt to out-Rush Rush. The basis of their formula was simple enough; How hard can this be? We're clearly smarter than everyone else. We'll just go on the radio and insult conservatives and demonstrate our moral and intellectual superiority and Rush will be destroyed. All they achieved was proving the exact opposite.

I think I tuned in exactly once for maybe 15 minutes or so. What I heard between the annoying spans of dead air (where Al and whoever was on with him had to stop talking in order to think of what their next smug insult on someone might be) was at best insipid. When they weren't dispensing cheap insults, they were literally congratulating each other in their moral and intellectual superiority. There was nothing else. I'm no fan of laugh tracks, but Air America definitely would have benefited from one. There was very little to laugh at unprompted.

Oh, and then there was the Air America loan "controversy" (scam): Exactly what argument could be made to justify why a charity such as the Boys and Girls Club (that was itself largely funded by taxpayer dollars) should be loaning the better part of a million dollars to a far-left Progressive radio show?

Al Franken commented "I don't know why they did it, and I don't know where the money went. I don't know if it was used for operations, which I imagine it was. I think he was robbing Peter to pay Paul."

Yeah, you do. Your program was dead. It was paying your salary, loser.

I'm afraid that so much of Progressivism is funded this way; via money laundering from legitimate sources ostensibly for legitimate reasons.

Which is the biggest difference between Rush and Air America. Rush doesn't need to be subsidized because people want to listen. Progressivism needs to be subsidized because people don't actually buy it; it has to be forced upon them. 30 years later, Rush perseveres.

Stumped: That's what the Democrats are. It's bad enough that they can't get rid of the Clintons, but what help could the "You didn't build that" omni-millionaire who's legacy almost totally disappeared within 18 months possibly be? Making people reminisce about the glory days of "Recovery Summer 2010"?
