Great White Way

stilton’s place, stilton, political, humor, conservative, cartoons, jokes, hope n’ change, buttigieg, husband, black voters, theater

Right up front, we want to go on record as being very sincerely supportive of gay folks and gay marriage. But we can't help commenting on the fact that Pete Buttigieg might benefit from a little more tailoring of the image he's presenting on the campaign trail.

Although "Mayor Pete" is enjoying a nice rise in recent polls, an in-depth study of black voters in South Carolina showed that many of them found his sexual orientation to be problematic - enough so that most weren't even considering voting for him.

Part of the problem, as expressed by those polled, is that they don't mind Buttigieg being gay, but do have a problem with how vocal he is about it. So surely it isn't helping matters when Buttigieg announces a contest in which the grand prize is a trip to San Francisco (more or less the gay mecca) to enjoy an evening of musical theater with his husband, Chasten.

We're sure it will be an absolutely lovely evening, but still - isn't the whole event just a little too "on the nose" for those voters who were already feeling uncomfortable? Why not make the grand prize a visit to Buttigieg's actual home, South Bend, Indiana, where Chasten can take the lucky winners on a tour of all the positive things Mayor Pete has accomplished?

Oh, that's right - he hasn't actually done such a great job of being a small town Mayor. So maybe the fabulous distractions aren't such a bad idea after all.

  1. I don't care what they call it, I don't care how "committed" they are to each other, I don't care how self-deluded they are, it's not "marriage". They can live their lives however they want and it doesn't "break my leg or pick my pocket" (Thomas Jefferson quote) but I will not participate in their fantasy world. "His husband" or "her wife" are just stupid things to say.

  3. It's a bad idea for the Buttguy to offer a prize trip to San Francisco for another reason: it gives entirely to vivid an example of where the Demn's (yes, even Major Peter... er, Mayor Pete's) policies would lead the rest of the country.

    Or perhaps spouse Chasten will simply "tiptoe" around those brown nuggets and golden pools the city is now known for...

  6. I think Mayor Pete would probably find much more participation if he simply held the contest for San Francisco residents, and the grand prize was a trip OUT OF San Francisco, even if only for a night.

    "Imagine leaving your house and being whisked away to a place where you can walk down the street with your cellphone in your pocket, instead of held in front of you with the CrapApp (aka Google Craps) on-screen as you "tiptoe 'round the poo drips and heave".

  8. Why not make the evening in their own home town, South Bend Over, Intheanda. It's almost as bad of a toilet as San Francisco

  10. What would be more obvious a move to expose a "man-whore" than to "farm him out" for an evening of "folly" in San Franfecal? I dare say if Trump offered someone Melania as a "prize", what the hubbub would be! More proof that sexual "innyourendo" is always lurking "behind" the scenes with Buttigiggles. And a small twist on an old favorite, first place prize, a day in San Franfecal... second place prize is a WEEK!

  13. @JustaJeepGuy- I like that Thomas Jefferson quote, and it nicely sums up how I feel. As an official codger and occasional libertarian, I largely don't care what people are doing anymore as long as they're not hurting anyone. And the whole concept of marriage has already gotten a pretty good beating from heterosexual couples who don't treat vows as vows. Mind you, I'm approaching all of this in a purely secular way. I believe that marriage within a church should be defined by that church.

    @M. Mitchell Marmel- Exactly. Gay or Straight, I don't really want anyone's sexual preferences waved in my face. As the saying goes, "Discretion is the better part of shutting up."

    @Pat Cummings- I agree that San Francisco is a poor choice of travel destination to celebrate Democrat accomplishments. Then again, although the contest rules don't spell it out, the winner will probably get a free hazmat suit.

    @Drypowda- By any chance were you part of the poll cited today? (grin)

    @Kay- I knew I'd catch a little flack today, but that's fine. I have always been completely honest here and wouldn't be serving the readers if I did otherwise. I don't care if a person or a couple is gay or straight, but do care about their moral values and how they live their lives outside the bedroom. So I'm quite comfortable with a gay conservative couple (yes, they exist!) but have no use for someone parading down a street in a sequined jockstrap with an ostrich feather in their ass.

    @Jason Anyone- Brilliant!

    @Section147- That happens a lot around here. A clever guy!

    @Regnad Kcin- I'm not sure you can get a wallet down a San Francisco sidewalk anymore; by the time you reached a street corner, it would look like a porcupine made of poop and syringes.

    @The Italian Meat Sauce- I think that's a fair question. Why stage a night of fabulosity in San Francisco instead of showing off the wonders of South Bend? And the answer is obvious - Mayor Pete hasn't exactly worked miracles there.

    @Bobo the Hobo- Exactly!

    @Bruce Bleu- In fairness to Chasten (and who the hell names their kid with a synonym for "scold"?!), I think the prize-winning evening is intended to be platonic.

    @Anonymous- I'm pretty sure that was the distilled sentiment of the South Carolina poll.

    @SFMedic- I, too, found that statement in the fine print of the rules to be a bit surprising. It pretty much suggests that illegals need to stay in the shadows...a sentiment which you'd think would be anathema to Buttigieg.

  14. I have been trying to reduce my intake of "news" for the past few days. Either that or go on maximum strength blood pressure meds to avoid stroking out. Therefore, I had no idea about this pitiful little piece of political theater. Is this really a thing? REALLY?

    Where are serious discussions of actual policy? Where are any actions being taken in the House of Representatives that could actually improve the lot of our citizens? Ratification of USMCA, immigration law reform, and spending reduction certainly come to mind.

    I'm afraid that the differences between our republic and the last decadent days of Rome, other than the technology which hastens our decline, are becoming infinitesimal.

  20. It's of no matter to me either because I'm not going to vote for any Democrat candidate; and is that term a joke or what? But just out of curiosity I do wonder if Butt-gig were to become POTUS: What would they do with the office of First Lady? I'm not willing to swap Melania for anything until by law we have to. Trump is doing a good job; but she's providing the class.

  21. Just a random thought: if Buttigieg developed a limp, went Vegan, and somehow convinced Bill and Shillary to adopt him, he'd be the dimocraps quintessential candidate! ReplyDelete
  26. Other than the fact that Mayor Pete is gay, just what does he offer that makes him worthy of being President? I mean, what has he done that makes South Bend Indiana such a wonderful place?

    Of course, Progressive elites have a warm place in their hearts for small college towns. They are wonderfully isolated places where the social and intellectual aristocracy get to live in relative comfort and ease, symbiotically serviced by a lower class, lesser-educated and less-affluent worker class that they can easily look down at and feel superior to. South Bend is definitely one of those places.

    In other words, if you're going to live surrounded by deplorables, they might as well be serving you avocado toast and lattes.

    Of course, if you aren't of the class that gets served avocado toast and lattes, then there really isn't much to recommend for South Bend. For you, it's just another former industrial town that largely lives off of transfer payments, federal grants and money brought in by largely indebted students looking to up their social status.

    As for Mayor Pete's effort to woo black voters, good luck with that. Mayor Mayor Pete's gayness is just not a feature that black voters are looking for. In fact, for many it's not a feature at all. If this offer is an attempt to boost support in that sector of the electorate, it's a big misfire.

    Speaking of wooing black voters: Seemed like all any Progressive could talk about yesterday was Trump's claim that he's "getting lynched" by Democrats and their impeachment proceedings. Of course, the grievance mongers jumped all over that, claiming that saying such a thing was racist.

    One of the requirements to being a happy Progressive is having absolutely no memory or self-awareness. By the evening, happy Internet warriors had assembled at least a half-dozen instances of Democrats deploying the "lynching" metaphor to the impending impeachment of Bill Clinton, including use by several black members of Congress, and not-unironically by Mr. unaware, Joe Biden himself:

    "Mr Biden, a top Democratic presidential candidate, said it was "abhorrent" and "despicable" that Mr Trump tweeted the racially loaded term on Tuesday. But it emerged that in 1998, Mr Biden used the same word to pillory President Bill Clinton's impeachment."

    So today, consider the "Great lynching crisis of October 22nd, 2019" over and done with. Time to move on to the next imagined grievance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @KanB: Perhaps the Buttguy is thinking, Hey, it worked for Obama! People will vote for the gay guy just to prove they're not intolerant.

    @Emmentaler Limburger: Great advice for MizPete! Differently-abled, differently-nutritioned, differently-faithed, and differently-sexed in addition to "different from those other socialist nitwits" might just be enough to carry him to the top of the scum—er, scrum—in the Democrat primaries.

    @Chuck Baker (Macon): Inuendo! A primo pun... although I'm sure the man and his husband could put us all straight about their choice in hemorrhoid remedies.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I neglected point out in my above post the added irony that it was in fact the Democratic Party itself that was party of the KKK and lynching. But like I said, a key to being a happy Progressive is having no knowledge or memory of the past, especially when it's your own.

    Escape from South Bend to California?: Good points made above about how bad South Bend must be if the winning prize is a trip to San Francisco.

    California has become a living museum to the abject failures or Progressivism. It's a great place to live if you are rich and can afford to mitigate the implications of these failures, but the cost of living is out of control especially for the middle class. The homeless are literally taking over communities like a zombie invasion. The streets are literally covered in s**t. Diseases formerly forgotten in the first world are making a revival. Defacto open borders flooding the market with cheap low-to-no skilled labor. That doesn't matter so much for the poor as welfare makes work largely pointless anyway.

    And now the lights are literally going out, just like they do in the ****hole countries.

    As for dropping your wallet in SF, you're probably just better off leaving it on the ground. There's nothing in my wallet worth a case of typhus, shigellosis, Hepatitis:

    Medieval Diseases Are Infecting California’s Homeless

    @Stilton, good comment:

    "...the whole concept of marriage has already gotten a pretty good beating from heterosexual couples who don't treat vows as vows.

    Decades ago, I think Dr. Laura put it best: There's absolutely nothing that homosexuals can do to harm the institution of marriage that heterosexuals haven't already done.

  29. I have to agree with the folks in South Carolina. I have zero issues with gay folks who consider sexual preferences a private matter. Mrs. muenster and I even have gay friends who are exactly that way. Not by coincidence, we have NO gay friends of the "gotta rub EVERYBODY's face in it" variety. To those types I say, if it consumes you that damn much, you need to seek psychological help because you have a sex addiction (or maybe more accurately, an attention addiction).

    I will never forget my 5 year class reunion (only 50 people in my class). This girl stands up in the middle of everybody and proudly announces, "I want everybody to know, I'm a homosexual." Without skipping a beat, my friend Richard, stood up and announced, "... and I'd like everybody to know that I'm a heterosexual." That's what I want to do whenever I encounter what I call "a flamer."

    @M Mitchell Marmel,
    Awesome!

  32. @igor, the last times I was in San Francisco was probably the mid-90s. I remember meeting up there with my father who was in town for some classes at Berkeley, and I also had to occasionally go there to visit the HQ of one my corporate clients of the time. I always had a good time. This was before the dot-com and tech explosions, implosions, and re-explosions. Mrs. Econ really wants to go for a mini-vacation. She may be a bit more enthused than I am because she has traveled extensively in the turd-world and has all the shots for doing so.

    There is a business in giving people tours of squalid locales as a form of "adventure" tourism. Perhaps some enterprising capitalist could come up with a "The Abject Failure of Progressivism" tour so people can experience what life would be like when the left imposes what they have in San Francisco on the rest of the country. Just make sure you have all your shots.

    @Old Cannonballs, one can only pray involving the case of the 7-year-old with the insane parent indulging transition fantasies into reality.

    I once had a nephew who for a year thought he was "The Hulk". So glad his parents didn't allow him to transition at the time.

    People like to scream "We need mental health" as a response to individuals doing heinous things. But just what can "mental health" possibly mean in an age where the government and professionals in the mental health industry not only refuse to step in to stop this level of insanity, but actually support and indulge in it? (Not to mention Presidential candidates that are pandering it)

    In most states, you now have to be somewhere between 18 and 21 to vote, drink, smoke, or buy a gun. But they'll let kids make life-altering and irreversible decisions like gender transitioning at 7.

    I really don't know what is more "mental"; a 7-year-old who wants to do this or the adults surrounding him who are encouraging it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. @igor,

    I spent my last couple months in the Navy (late '77) stationed at Treasure Island. San Francisco was a pretty nice place then, and the only big city I was ever in that I liked. That was before the city got completely taken over by the trouser pilots (David Letterman reference). I once wanted to go back, but there's no way in the world I'd go there now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @TrickyRicky- Amen, brother. I, too, have been limiting my exposure to (ahem) "news" for mental wellbeing, mostly because so much of it is either fake, insubstantial, or both. Are there any Democrats running on a platform other than hating Trump and offering free shit? If so, I haven't heard them.

    @Emmentaler Limburger- You think that's bad, before it was "enjoying a nice rise" I'd originally said he was "coming from behind." It's a minefield, I tell ya!

    @Alej- Well when you put it that way... (grin)

    @Alfonso Bedoya- I see what you did there!

    @Chuck Baker- The whole "shut up, already" concept is extremely compelling, and I apply that equally no matter what someone's sexual persuasion is. And regarding Hillary, I've been on the record all along as saying that she plans to jump in after the lesser candidates have battered each other. Never forget: if she has a pulse, she's running.

    @rickn8or- Do we know for a fact that he isn't?

    @Rod- Sooner or later, there will be a female President - which is fine by me as long as she's got political views I agree with. So an official name will have to be determined for the First Husband or whatever the hell he'll be called. I'll suggest "First Laddy," but I doubt it will catch on anywhere other than Scotland.

    @Emmentaler Limburger- All of those qualities would be in the "win" category for Democrats. And frankly, if Bill Clinton was the first black president, I don't know why Buttigieg couldn't be the first female president now that words don't actually mean anything.

    @skeet9801- We aim to please!

    @Emmentaler Limburger- You should expect to hear from his campaign with a job offer any minute now.

    @American Cowboy- Wow, that would be the dream come true for the Lefties, wouldn't it?

    @KanB- My point exactly.

    @John the Econ- I have family that live in South Bend (and it's Mrs. J's home town). It's full of fine people, but it's fallen on hard times and Mayor Pete hasn't really accomplished diddly-squat in terms of making it better. Regarding the lottery for a fabulous evening, it's actually open to everyone - not targeted exclusively to black voters. I oversimplified just a bit to fit both the poll results and the contest into a 3-panel format. 2 panels if you don't count Samuel L. Jackson's death stare.

    Regarding "lynching," I was pressed for time yesterday or certainly would have touched on the subject. Lynching has not been the exclusive curse of black folks, and using the term the way Trump did was absolutely accurate and race-neutral. Although I realize that by declaring anything race-neutral these days, I must be a racist.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Pat Cummings- I'm not sure that "straight guilt" is as powerful a motivator as "white guilt" at the polls, but who knows anymore?

    @John the Econ- Great summation of what's happened to California in general and San Francisco in particular. And good catch on the quote from Dr. Laura - she's voicing exactly what I think.

    @Colby Muenster- Sounds like we're on the same page regarding loud declarations of sexual preferences. I think it's good to remember that "they're called privates for a reason."

    @Glenda T Goode- Yep. I'll take someone gay over someone anti-American every time.

    @igor- You're clearly considering marriage strictly in church/Biblical terms, and that's fine - I'm not going to debate that with anyone and I'm a strong proponent of freedom of religion. Personally, I got married in a courthouse by a judge, so it should be unsurprising that I talk (and think) about marriage in a more secular "recognized by the state" kind of way.

    And yes, Buttigieg gives us plenty of reasons to not want him as president based on policy considerations and his own track record of governance.

    @Geoff King- I presumed you meant as "in merry" because if you were "in Mary" you would not be gay.

    @Old Cannonballs- We'll just have to agree to disagree on the homosexuality thing, though I'm sure as heck in full agreement with you about all of the other gender-swapping craziness, and ESPECIALLY the insanity of gender reassignment for a child. That's child abuse, impure and simple.

    @Geoff King- Sure, you say that now...but what about when you're in the locker room?

    @TIMWYNNE@GMAIL.COM- Wait, how did the Beverly Hillbillies get mixed up in here?!

    @John the Econ- I like your idea of an "adventure" tour of San Francisco. My father once proposed (with humorous intent) the concept of a glass-bottomed bus. That might be the safest way to explore Democrat-run cities these days.

    The case of the 7-year-old is very upsetting, and the fact that everyone can't easily see how wrong it is only reinforces how far our culture has plunged.

    @JustaJeepGuy- I've never been there, but San Francisco looked nice in movies and Rice-a-Roni commercials. These days, I don't even want to know what the "San Francisco Treat" is...or what meds you'd need to get rid of it.

  38. @Stilton, I'm not slamming South Bend so much as I am being critical of how Progressives see such places and what they consider success to be. I live in a place very similar to South Bend; A university town that generations ago was far more affluent with a thriving middle class and was better known for industries other than the university. Whereas South Bend was better known for manufacturing, we were known for timber and mining. As those industries declined and eventually evaporated, that left the universities as the main economic driver that brought outside money into the town. (In my town, the university and health care are the biggest employers)

    One of the consequences of the decline of industrial activity was that as the political influence of those industries disappeared, local government became more influenced by the kind of politics found at the university, which of course meant far-leftward. I don't know about South Bend, but in my town it means that city government is more interesting in "climate change" than the deteriorating condition of the street outside my house. As I will say to anyone who will listen, "You people can't manage pavement. What makes you think you can manage the climate?"

    Another effect is the social and economic schism that has evolved. University-dominated towns tend to bifurcate. There are the people who are well payed and securely employed at the U. There are the kids who go there. (Some are affluent or feel that way because they've borrowed 6-figures to live on) There are a number of the more affluent who own local businesses or are already independently wealthy. Then there is everyone else. Most of the remaining jobs are of the low-pay service variety.

    Our town has the added problem of that it's a very pleasant place to live. Kids come to school here, fall in love with the area with it's scenery, recreational opportunities, and easy-going lifestyle. Many choose to stay after graduating. The result is a lot of over-educated people competing for a limited number of relatively low-paying service sector jobs. Also, as land available for new housing becomes more scarce and the land preservationists put what land is available off-limits, housing becomes more and more expensive. (I don't know if South Bend has that problem)

    To make things worse, any proposal of economic activity that does not fall within the "low impact" variety that Progressives like gets discouraged. So we get lots of brew pubs and coffee places and that sort of hip urban stuff, but not the wealth-producing more industrial jobs that bring money and good paying jobs into the area. Just as I am always amused by Progressives who argue for "affordable housing" while pushing policy that makes it expensive or impossible to build, I am just as amused by Progressives who argue that we need high-paying jobs, but then only tolerate new business that mostly create only minimum wage jobs.

    So you get the kind of him place where a guy like Buttigieg is fashionable. The elite are happy because they're living in a near-perfect fantasy town with hip placed to eat, drink and what not. But for everyone else, life is harder. And the consequences of Progressive policy only make things harder for the middle class, which IMHO these people couldn't care less about.

    This just in:

    Pete Buttigieg Announces $10 Billion Proposal To End Workplace Sexual Harassment

    Because of anything can fix sexual harassment, $10-billion can. There's gotta be a good cartoon in that one. I'm sure Lefty Lucy & Busty have something to say.
