Berned Again

So many Democrats are currently throwing their hats into the presidential ring, it's like watching lemmings cascading from a fiscal cliff.

The latest entrant is the 77-years-young Socialist Bernie Sanders. Considering that absolutely nothing about the candidate or his ideas is truly new, we feel like it's appropriate to commemorate his entry into the race with some similarly shopworn cartoons from the political past.

Don't think of it as laziness on our part. Think of it as "redistribution of humor."

stilton’s place, stilton, political, humor, conservative, cartoons, jokes, hope n’ change, bernie sanders, 2020

stilton’s place, stilton, political, humor, conservative, cartoons, jokes, hope n’ change, bernie sanders, 2020

But in the end, Bernie ended his 2016 run when he received an offer he couldn't refuse...

Wonder if Hillary will really off Bernie this time? Oh, wait! She isn't running! Yeah, right. Better watch your back Bern!

shrillary is determined to get back into the White House... there are some Secret Service people who have some comeuppance for telling the truth about the harridan, and she is NOT going to be denied AGAIN! Plus, the Benghazi fustercluck... that operation was supposed to be kept on the "down low"... what bonehead made it public? Yep, she's got some "Breitbart's Syndrome" to spread!

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie. How long before your followers see the hypocrisy of a multi-millionaire who owns 3 houses decrying income inequality?

Stil, I don't think of Bernie's rerun as "redistribution of humor.",

But in a more social (ist) meme,
Bernie (and by extension all of the humor) is just being a good green thinker.

(kinda like the brain power associated with mold and fungus)

And he is "recycling" to save the planet from the terrors of a booming economy.
He wishes to save people from having jobs to work at,
and being able to pay those bills that should of course be free!

Ahh, now we see why Bernie supports the New Green Deal,
He will not have any competition in the flatulence department
from those uppity bovines.

I'm waiting for all 1,825 democrats who are running for POTUS to start telling each other how wrong they are when they are all for the same thing. And, to make matters worse, there are two inches of snow on my driveway. Not enough for a snowman but just enough for a snow midget.

Fish Out of Water said...

@Geoff King: They won't see... Blind faith blinds the gormless absolutely. I'll add my voice too that The Bern's moment in the sun has passed. He's ether politically very naive or stuffed with hubris for if he was truly serious about seeking POTUS, he'd have quietly started campaigning the day after the vilest, most venal, most divisive and possibly most mentally deluded public figure in modern history lost in her bid (don't how many times I can be thankful for that) for POTUS.

Stilt,
Looks like you are feeling better. Happy for that. Keep up the good work.

Bernie would make a good Walmart greeter. He has the personality, and the appearance of someone that has something to say, while those that don't think it's important make their way to the frozen pizza aisle.

@Geoff King- It says a lot about our government and "civil servants" that a guy whose entire private sector CV consists of being a carpenter who by all accounts couldn't drive a 16d nail in a half hour and has been on the government teat since age 40 is now a multi-millionaire with three houses.

It says a lot about our electorate that he can peddle his socialist BS without being laughed out of the public arena.

We are in a spot of bother as our friends across the pond might say.

While were on the topic of neo-marxist POTUS hopefuls, apparently AOC has felt the sting/fallout from Amazon walking away from its deal on a NYC HQ as evidenced by this Tweet of hers:

https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1096434433639489536

She is either so full of herself, or just jaw-droppingly politically dumb not to realize constituent service is what keeps a Member of the House in office. as exhibit A heer is the late "doc" Long of Maryland, whose political longevity was due to him taking care of his constituents first.

@Anonymous- I think you've summed Bernie up quite nicely!

@REM1875- Every candidate should get one throwable cream pie and a boxing glove.

@cridge- Yogi was a wise man.

@M. Mitchell Marmel- Hey, at least we can give thanks for the inner tube.

@Jim Irre- I think Bernie just wants Hillary to buy him another beach house.

@Bruce Bleu- It'll be interesting to see what Hillary does. This is clearly her last chance. I wouldn't want to be standing between her and her ambitions...she doesn't have anything to lose.

@Geoff King- He benefits from income inequality, but feels just awful about it. And isn't that really all that matters?

@MSG Grumpy- I have dear friends who are honestly excited to have Bernie in the race because they support him. These are good people who see the world very differently than I do. Socialism is, at best, a celebration of mediocrity and the embodiment of envy. And we've already seen that, when the going gets tough, Bernie sells out.

@Fred Ciampi- I, too, am looking forward to hearing how these Dems try to differentiate their policies or criticize their same-party opponents. It should be amusing.

@Fish Out of Water- Bless Bernie's old Socialist heart, but he just doesn't seem to understand how reviled old white men are these days. There is not a prayer of anyone in his demographic heading the Democrat ticket for 2020.

@Jack Wiegman- Glad to say I'm feeling better, but not quite 100% yet. Which was a factor in deciding to pull cartoons from the vault today. But then again, what the hell news is there to say about Bernie?

@Jess- That would be the perfect job for Bernie. Outside of the fact that Socialists hate Walmart for being big and successful while ignoring the degree to which Walmart minimizes the impact of "income inequality" by providing affordable products for lower income groups.

@TrickyRicky- I read a statistic recently that over half of everyone in Congress is a millionaire (or more likely a multi-millionaire). Not that they all STARTED that way...they just seem to accrue wealth "magically." Hmm...

@Fish Out of Water- I don't think AOC sees herself as a representative of those who elected her. Rather, she sees herself as a national figure who happened to get her ticket to the circus paid for when the folks back home took up a collection.

I quite agree. Bernie doesn't have a chance; he is an old white man that isn't nearly radical enough for the Democrat Party anymore.

$600K for a summer place is not unreasonable. We have a $300K condo at Long Beach, WA that is used year round by our 5 kids and a total of over 20 adults and kids in our family. That's 15K/person investment for the next generatio. We pay the mortgage and taxes and they take care of the place.Best money we have ever spent.

A place at Long Beach never crossed our mind. One of the kids suggested it. They have an online website to reserve their use. Aug is already booked. There is enough sleeping room for two pair of adults and several kids.

I find the idea that 77-year-old Bernie Sanders is running less absurd than the fact that people are still receptive to the 171 years old ideas he's peddling that that have failed over, and over, and over again. Not only have they failed every single time, but quite often they've failed while imposing human suffering that makes what the Nazis imposed look downright quaint.

The other amusing thing about a Bernie candidacy in 2020 is that unlike in 2016, this time he's the conservative Democrat. In the 3 years since he shook up Hillary's world, the party has moved so far to the left that "socialist" is not only no longer a pejorative, but advocating outright socialism has not only become safe, it's now downright hip. The current crop of Democratic front-runners make the 2016 Bernie look almost like a Republican. (At least Bernie used to argue for a closed borders, making him even more conservative that most Republicans)

If you find this disturbing as I do, there is an upside to consider. When Marx released the Communist Manifesto in 1848, the proletariat from which he was hoping to spark a revolution from was destitute. They had very little to lose by staging a revolt to upend the entire social and economic order. That is definitely not the case today. The middle class in America, and even largely the poor as well enjoy a standard of living that exceeds that of most of the world, even including Western Europe.

These people do like when they hear about things that are very expensive today, like health care and a college education becoming "free" things that will supposedly be paid for by someone else they neither know or like. But when the Democrat's "Green New Deal" trial balloon launched a few weeks ago with a bit too much unexpected honesty about where the Marxist central planners wished to take America, the middle class took notice. They may be largely economically illiterate, but they aren't so dense to as to not get that simply shutting down at least half of the economy or outlawing meat will not be a good thing for them.

In other words, today's middle class and even most of the poor have far too much to lose. Unlike Marx's "workers", America's middle class has nice homes, cars, electronic entertainments and toys, vacations, IRAs and 401Ks. The "Green New Deal" transparently and literally threatened all of that.

Also consider that since 2016, millions of millennials have discovered something that was conspicuously absent during the Obama era: Jobs. Now that many are working at paying jobs for the first time ever, they are coming to recognize that their futures are far brighter at their own hands than it ever would have been based upon the promises of government largess. They also see what that largess takes out of their paycheck. They won't be as enthusiastic about Bernie this time around either.

John the Econ said...

@TrickyRicky, it's also my understanding that Bernie got kicked out of a commune for being useless. He's a perfect example for my maxim for "Of all the avowed socialists that I knew when I was in school, absolutely none of them saw their future as being just one of the "workers".

One of the proofs of the amazing success of our relatively-free-market economy is that it creates so much excess affluence that people like Bernie not only are permitted to survive, but actually thrive. This is not something that true Marxist economies can provide to very many.

@Fish Out of Water, the Amazon fallout certainly is interesting and when all is said and done, I think Amazon pulling out of NYC will ultimately get blamed upon the resistance put forth by the narrow self-interests of certain people, including AOC.

One of the big ones was the unions. NYC is unquestionably a union town and Amazon was clear that they were not going to encourage unionization. The last thing union people want in a overwhelmingly union town is a highly successful and high-paying company like Amazon making them look bad. So they did all they could to kill it.

And then there were those upset about the tax subsidies. Personally, I'm not a fan of this sort of crony capitalist deal for several reasons. First, they are only available to large, already successful and established companies like Amazon who are politically well-connected. This is hardly fair to those who are not as large or politically connected. Second, it's not fair to everyone else in the community who continue to have to pay taxes at the full rate. Third, it creates a fertile environment for corruption.

As for AOC and "Come for me all you want, but my job is to make sure that people are protected in society.": I'm pretty sure she has no sense of constituency service. She's an ideological true believer, and if the little people in her district have to suffer a bit longer before realizing her great socialist dream, so be it.

The funny thing here is that all she's protected her constituents from are good paying jobs.

Her comments regarding the deal were galactically ignorant, speaking as though the money that New York was going to let Amazon keep already existed to be spent elsewhere on things more to her liking. Yes, Amazon was going to get to keep billions of dollars that otherwise might have gone into city and state coffers, but only after they had brought many billions more into the city.

Will her constituency punish her for this? I kinda doubt it. They've been voting for Democrats well beyond living memory who have also failed to deliver significant or measurable results.

Fish Out of Water said...

@John the Econ: I'll concede your point, slightly. NY sent to Congress again and again that monstrous harridan Bella Abzug, who outside of her vulgar, big mouth, and gross mistreatment of her staff (a college acquaintance, who interned for then Congressman Sarbanes, whose Capital Hill office was next to hers, attested to that), was a MOC of little consequence. On the other hand, there was a young female , firebrand "progressive " elected to represent one of the People's Democratic Republic of Maryland's more indigo Congressional districts, got it her mind after her freshman term, that she deserved an open Senate seat instead of the candidate groomed by the state Democratic party . She was squashed like a bug in the elections. Sooooo.

Dan said...

Will AOC's constituency vote her out? May not be necessary. I read someplace there's a chance of her district be redistricted out of existence. Heh.

Remember all the times Democrats told us to beware the Republican party because it was just a bunch of old, white haired, money grubbers? So.... that argument doesn't work anymore, so now they're a bunch of racist haters or stupid "Walmart" people, right? Well let's take inventory:

Bernie and Shrillary - Old white haired money grubbers.
Booker, Tlaib, Omar and Kamala Harris - racists.
AOC and Uncle Joe - Maybe not "Walmartish," but nailed the stupid part.

Seriously, Ol' Bern doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of doing what he did in 2016 again. Back then, the Democrat Socialists had a choice of him or Shrillary, so he did very well for obvious reasons. He's up against some other, younger lefty-loonies this time, so he won't fare so well, I think.

I would feel so much better about the morons in the Democrat party if the president didn't make me cringe every other time he opened his mouth. Usually it's not what he says, but how he says it, and he's pissed off so many people that despite his track record, he's not nearly as strong as he should be. There are probably millions of people who will refuse to vote for him just because his demeanor tends to be so abrasive. I think it's b.s., and it's certainly not going to stop me from voting for him, but way too many people value style over substance.

Old Cannonballs, I'm a little rough around the edges myself and I flinch a little when President Trump gets hold of his Tweeter. But I'm going to vote for him again, because I'm trying to elect a leader, not a BFF.
