Brightest Star in the Cancellation

stilton’s place, stilton, political, humor, conservative, cartoons, jokes, hope n’ change, scott adams, dilbert, race, tirade, hotep jesus

Fans of the comic strip "Dilbert" may be distressed to find out that the wildly popular cartoon is being dropped by pretty much every virtue-signaling newspaper in America because of an alleged "racist tirade" by series creator Scott Adams.

Did he say the things he's accused of saying? Yes. Was it a "racist tirade?" No.

In a much-too-tiny nutshell, Adams reported on a recent Rasmussen poll in which 53% of black respondents agreed with the statement that "it's okay to be white." Meaning nearly half of the respondents either didn't think that or were unwilling to express their opinion. Considering that degree of anti-white hostility, Adams sarcastically said black people en masse (not individuals) are a "hate group" that white people should cautiously avoid.

He clearly stated that every person, regardless of skin color, should be respected, happily interacted with personally and professionally, and enjoy all of the freedoms and opportunities our nation has to offer. But based on the poll, Adams said that the only white person moving into a black neighborhood would be making a problematic choice. Adams has encouraged white journalists who have chosen to live in black neighborhoods to cast stones at him. The others can choke on their own self-righteous hypocrisy.

Adams is, in my opinion, a genius who thinks on multiple levels, most of them significantly above the mainstream mentality. I pay a monthly fee to support his podcasts on Locals.com and it's not unusual for his live stream to be the only human voice I hear on any given day (bonus: his takes on the news are frequently humorous, unexpected, and brilliant). So I can confidently say that he is not a racist, that his remarks - while knowingly inflammatory - were well-reasoned and not a tirade and, as usual, the liberal media has quite deliberately mischaracterized everything.

Mind you, to the frustration of his critics Adams is neither apologetic nor even unhappy about the brouhaha, and quite possibly lit this fuse on purpose in order to force a more honest discussion of racism in this country (Elon Musk has already tweeted support for Adams). The man thinks big and, frankly, no one else was giving the issue more than lip service including the many "news" outlets now castigating him. So maybe now we'll finally have a real conversation.

I don't have the energy or mental acuity to get into all the details, so my primary purpose today is simply to tell anyone who's heard that "the Dilbert guy is a horrible racist who hates black people" that it's a heinous lie. Scott Adams said things that woke culture has decreed You Must Not Say, but that doesn't make him either racist or wrong.

You can see and hear his original remarks, in context, in this Youtube video and get a much more detailed explanation in this lengthy (and fascinating)  interview with black podcast host Hotep Jesus. And no, I didn't know there was a guy named Hotep Jesus out there until now, but I'm glad I've discovered him.

That makes Scott a three time loser!

They be callin' THAT a tirade? Well, they need to get out off the block. I'm calling their bullshit. A real tirade would shock them.

Adams produces observant & witty humor; Dilbert will prevail. We needs us a Pocket Protector Posse. All this gives me the idea to go out tomorrow and find more Dilbert cartoon books. Lemonade from lemons. Funny 'toon here too; thanks again Stilt.

I have always judged people on their own comments and actions whatever color they may be.

So, when I was beaten up and robbed by four black 17 and 18 year olds when I was twelve, I did not hold all blacks responsible. Likewise, when I was mugged by a black man in the East Village in NYC with a gun in my early twenties I did not pass judgment on the black race.
Nor did I do so when, in my mid-twenties my apartment was burglarized, again, by a black man. Nor in my mid-30's when my car was stolen from in front of my house by a black man.

In my career as a police officer I did not treat blacks differently from whites. In fact, when I left the police department to practice law in my late 30's, many of the black people whom I had arrested came to my office to seek my representation.

So you can imagine my surprise when, in my late 50's, my elder son, who had not lived with me for five years, told me that I was the most prejudiced person that he knew and he was willing to bet that I had never dated a black woman. My younger son said to him, "Sean, don't even go there."

Sean's eyebrows went up and he told me that his opinion of me had just gone up. I responded that my opinion of him had just gone down.

And imagine my surprise when I moved from New York to Louisiana and found that there was less racial prejudice here than there.

Why am I saying all of this? Because I, like Scott Adams, make my judgments based on the character of the individual, not the color of his or her skin.

So thanks, Stilt, for adding your support to Scott. I have already called the editor of our local rag to advise him that I will never again buy his paper because of its racist editorial policies. Of course he doesn't know that I will probably be gone in less than a month nor does he care about losing some readers. For him it's all about liberal policies.

Honestly, the most racist people that I have known were Democrats. And I have to believe that they know that.

And, on another note, our red lilles are starting to bloom, along with some of our wild flowers. I never saw flowers bloom in February in NY. I really like it down here for so many reasons. I just wish that I'd be here for the crepe myrtles in the end of April. I hope that your garden is continuing to bloom. Prayers and hugs for you and daughter J.

Democrats racist? You'd think they started the Klan. Or formed the Confederacy (CSA). Or developed and perpetuated Jim Crow. Or had the Klanbake. You get the idea. Short read:
https://thefederalistpapers.org/us/the-1924-klanbake-dem-convention-sheds-light-on-democratic-party-history

I remember when, as a kid (this was in the 1950s in New Jersey), my older brother and I were down by a creek finding snails and such. Some black kids came down the road and one of them wanted to cause trouble. One of them locked my brother's arms behind his back and held him while demanding the others beat him. They didn't. My takeaway was some people are just jerks and troublemakers; most are not.

In today's world, anyone famous can't say something when taken out of context is damaging to their income. It's nice to be a nobody that's retired, everything paid off and living out in the sticks. I've been enjoying Dilbert for years and the only strip I get in my email on a daily basis. I tried to follow his blog a few years back and found it too long and rambling to keep up with. I don't have an hour a day to keep up with what anyone has to say today, including my wife. It doesn't surprise me that he got himself in trouble.

First, if the so-called virtue-signaling newspapers are doing this because they feel they are going to financially punish Scott Adams, think again. After all these years, even if he stopped publishing today, I am sure he has enough $$$ to last him through the rest of his life and several reincarnations.

Second, these information dinosaurs seem to forget they no longer hold a monopoly on information. Personally, I haven't picked up a hard copy newspaper in ages and ages. And as for online reading, I know I have other options than say the WaPo if I want to read the latest installment of Dilbert.

Last, what happened to diversity of opinions and freedom of expression (I know I am being slightly rhetorical)? Personally the best way to deal with odious thought is not to suppress it (which makes it more attractive) but to put it out in the open air and sunlight so that people can see it for what it is.

I have said this before and will repeat it here. We are living in the grip of a global, collective mass hysteria, the likes of which have not been seen since mass hysteria Mao inflicted on the Chinese people in the '60's

Fish Out of Water said...

Getting off tangent here, but Mao, and the near continuous damage he inflicted while he was alive, on progress and innovation in China and upon the Chinese people themselves, got me thinking of another Mao-horror besides his proletarian cultural revolution. The risible if it weren't for the millions who died for it, Great Leap Forward. And I believe I see parallels in the damage it will cause in what I think I can call our Great Green Leap Forward of today.

If you're not a racist yet, you haven't been paying attention the last 50 years.
"Racist" now has two opposite meanings:

1. Left - Any person who doesn't agree quickly enough and vehemently enough with the Narrative of the day.

2. Right - Any person who doesn't hate himself and his own people.

So let me get this right,
In this society it is Racist to say: "It's OK to be White"
But it is empowering and wonderful to say "Black is beautiful"
AND
When someone who is white (and a non-Rapper type) says the "N" word,
That is a HATE CRIME,
While if the White Rapper and ALL of the melanin enhanced individuals Scream it out for the world to hear, we are supposed to celebrate their vocabulary????
It is now RACIST to use White paint and the Secretary of Transportation thinks it is RACIST to have White Construction workers???

I was raised in the 60's and 70's to believe that it is the person's character and NOT skin color that determines who they are,
But then again I have always believed that a Meritocracy is the BEST system for a functioning and well mannered society...
So obviously I an RACIST>...

Stilt,

You will remember the time the Babylon Bee published a text claiming that North Korea's Kim had been declared the "Handsomest Man in the World."

The Koreans mistakenly accepted it as a valid claim. That set everybody off in a big chuckle and helped people understand that we live with senses of humor.

If I had the mental acuity I would swamp media with claims of racism against every institution of the Democratic Party. It would be fun and could help "level the playing field."

My (your) (anybody else') letters to media would be published with claims of racist incidents within the DNC. We could flood media with wild claims that would have to be believed. Newspapers eat this stuff up.

It would be fun to attack every lying Left-Wing environmental group in this way.We could easily and cheaply go after EPA and every state DEQ. How about attacking the mayor of the nearest town?

The law protects people who make such claims against the biggies and biggie organizations. That's how they've hurt so many of us. Now hit 'em back.

Note that it costs nothing to start a service organization that pays no taxes and receives no taxes. Thus you can file your complaints against the nasties in the name of your organization. Would you like to be the Fort Worth Senior Women's campaign for integrity in politics? How about the Integrity Society? Leave yourself as President, Director or "Executive Director" and sign with your real name.

Anyone else remember when Progressives were supposedly at war against "hate"? Now it's clear that they can't live without it.

The question itself is as dumb as it is revealing. But could you imagine a survey that asked whites respondents if it was okay to be black? Outside of the staff at "The Daily Stormer", exactly just who'd answer "No"?

As for belonging to any "Hate Group", for quite some time now you now qualify merely by not being a Progressive Democrat, regardless of your skin color.

If I was Adams, I probably would not have said what he said the way he said it. But as @Stilton points out, Adams is no idiot. He knew exactly what he was doing and the consequences of doing it. So he's got a next-level agenda.

Part of that agenda might be retirement from cartooning. He's been doing Dilbert for over 30 years now, which is a pretty long run for any form of media. Maybe he wants to get cancelled instead of just quitting.

As for having any "real conversation", I wouldn't hold my breath on that. The reality is twofold; There are now too many people employed by the "Grievance Industrial Complex" making more money than they ever could in the honest economy and they'll never want that gravy train to end, and the Progressive political agenda is now largely supported by the division created by the complex to be able to give it up.

There are only two things can can stop it. The first, and least likely is a mass realization that all of this artificially generated hate and division is hurting us economically and as a nation. The second and most likely is a total economic collapse that will end the gravy train by robbing society of the surplus wealth to fund all of this uselessness. The 2nd won't be good for anyone, but it will be far worse for those without anything of real value to trade.

@Paul Donohue, I've never dated a black woman either. So that's now the criteria for being a racist? Considering that black women represent less than 14% of the possible dating pool, does that mean that for every 7 women I may have dated in my youth, one of them should have been black in order to escape the dreaded "r" epithet?

Although I did tell my wife years ago that the only woman I'd likely leave her for would have been Condoleezza Rice. IMHO, that woman had it all.

I did date a couple of Jewish girls in my youth. Does that now insulate me from ever being called an anti-Semite?

And I concur with your observation regarding racism in the north vs. the south. I spent a decade-and-a-half living in the south and noticed exactly the same thing.

As for Mr. Adams' income: My guess is that he's made his money and no longer cares, making him less restrained in his public comments just as J.K. Rowling no longer cares if she pisses off the Progressive universe. He's 65 and ready for retirement.

As for Mr. Adams' musings over the last several years: Like many have said before me, I just don't have the kind of time it takes to listen to many podcasts. (I've been WFH for the better part of 40 years whereas podcasts seem optimized for people who spend hours commuting on a daily basis) I do follow him and occasionally listen. Sometimes I agree, and sometimes I don't. And that's okay. I don't want to agree with everyone all the time, or otherwise I'd fear that I was becoming a modern Progressive. Modern Progressivism demands uniformity of thought.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Mike aka Proof- That's Adams' point. If white people are irredeemably racist no matter what they do, why should they try to make things better? Of course, he's not really saying the effort shouldn't be made - he's saying the dialogue needs to change.

@Rod- The media members who don't call Adams' remarks a "tirade" are calling a "rant." It was neither. Bastards.

@Paul Donohue- As ever, a delight to hear from you and my day has been made! Your experiences perfectly illustrate a lot of things, including that good people don't judge individuals based on the actions of other individuals, whatever their skin color. My family has had similar experiences: my father was robbed at gunpoint by a black kid. My brother was stalked by a black guy who eventually killed another person. A black man working under Kathy brought a gun to work to kill her and she had to flee after being warned by a black friend. The police told us to close our blinds and avoid windows, presumably forever. None of the black people who had seen the gun would testify to it, so no disciplinary action could be taken. So in order to let Kathy get back to work, the gunman was given a promotion in order to move him to another department. And I could go on, but the point is that this isn't a list of why I dislike black people (I don't!) but rather a list of complete assholes who were black.

Democrats are indeed the worst racists I know, historically and currently. They are the group that believes in the inherent inferiority of black people and relegate all of them to "short bus" status because of imagined cognitive impairment. Why THAT'S not called out as despicably racist, I'll never know.

Good to hear that you've got flowers blooming. They continue to come up around here, too, and I wish I could ask Kathy what the names of them are - but I know that she planted them and that makes me happy. We've got quite a few bright yellow daffodils in bloom now and I don't know if there's a cheerier-looking flower.

You and yours remain in my prayers. And I'm glad to see that you're still rattling cages!

@Dan- Your summation is perfect: some people are just jerks, most are not.

@M. Mitchell Marmel- I agree that "woke" people tend to be jerks, because their "woke" beliefs aren't derived from logic and analysis, they're derived from "group think," peer pressure, and self-righteousness.

@Jay Dee- In fairness to Youtube, that was my bad. I goofed up the link and it has now been fixed.

@Larry Hoffman- Adams has been aware that his daily podcast only costs him income, but his goal has become to improve the world rather than maximize earnings. As of this writing, his income for Dilbert has dropped to zero. The companies he's worked with have dropped him. The legacy of his comic is likely gone. There's question about whether his next book (which is not Dilbert-related or comic) will even be published. And he knew all of this would likely happen but decided to speak truth to power anyway.

@Garet- To be clear, Adams wouldn't want you to lose or avoid any of your Porch Settin' Buddies and would no doubt enjoy settin' on that porch with all of you. None of what he's saying applies to individuals. Rather, he's criticizing an anti-white group culture (which doesn't apply to everyone in the group) that is actually prolonging racial suffering. His goal is the colorblind society espoused by MLK Jr.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Fish Out of Water- Good points, all. Adams is indeed financially independent at this point and is likely smart enough to make money in non-publishing venues. Regarding hard-copy newspapers, I see them as dinosaurs: heading for extinction and brains the size of walnuts. I'll note the WSJ as a great exception, though I only subscribe electronically these days.

There likely would be a few newspapers that would like to keep the "Dilbert" strip, but not enough for there to be a financial break-even point for Adams. Plus, his syndicate has already said "sayonara" although it came out muffled-sounding what with their face buried in a liberal ass.

@McChuck- These days, any white person who says they aren't racist is exhibiting "white fragility" which is, of course, racist. There ain't no winning a fixed game.

@Mech- Adams can certainly come off as arrogant (although some of that is a pose, as was the case with Rush Limbaugh) and he can certainly be wrong about things. I don't agree with him on everything, but he's sharp enough that I won't disagree without re-evaluating my arguments to make sure I'm right.

@MSG Grumpy- I have to laugh at the weak-kneed sentiment that "it's okay to be white." Not "White Power," or "Aryan Nation," or "White is Beautiful," or any other declaration. Just that it's okay to be white. And still it's too much for some to accept. What good can come of that?

And yes to meritocracy. I'd like to hear why Democrats are against it without demeaning black Americans.

@TrickyRicky- Amen to that.

@Dick Lowman- I wanted to make this post to help people get real information. The story is complex enough that I haven't even barely summarized it accurately, but I'm at least pointing in the right direction and have given links to hear the facts. And I'm old enough to remember when that wasn't considered a subversive act.

@American Cowboy- All of those qualities you mention have been defined as "racist" by Democrats who don't believe that black Americans either have those qualities or can compete with others who have those qualities. So remind me who the racists are?

@Anonymous- I screwed up the link. I'm not smart, just handsome.

@Mesquite Country- There's undeniably a serious race issue and it won't be resolved until those in power no longer benefit from stoking racial division.

@M. Mitchell Marmel- Thanks for the correction. I've fixed the link on the main page and berated myself for having fumble fingers.

@Jack- You've got a host of good ideas there. The law indeed protects freedom of expression, but that won't protect against unpleasant consequences from the assholery. Which is why people like Adams are just going to suck that up for the greater good. There's a minimal risk that my opinions here could be problematic in some areas of my life, but I care too much about doing what's right to let Adams stand alone.

@Bill the Cat- Subscribers to Adams' Locals.com feed get information that he's not sharing on his daily Youtube podcast.

@American Cowboy- As Adams has pointed out, hundreds of outlets have called him a despicable human being but nobody has disagreed with him. His argument boils down to "if a group of people has a high percentage of people who don't like you because of your skin color, you should probably avoid that group." Swap out any races you like and it remains true.

@M. Mitchell Marmel- Exactly.

@John the Econ- I agree that Adams has a bigger agenda here and it will be interesting to watch it play out. Sadly, I also agree that it's unlikely we're going to have that "real conversation" anytime soon.

@Jeri Xiques- I know your sentiments about Paul are shared by everyone here.

@John the Econ- Determining your degree of racism based on who you've dated gets complicated pretty quickly. Should we each be given a checklist to make sure that we've dated someone in every racial group, trifled with trans people, done a dab of homosexuality, or had congress with the disabled? Considering that the Left says "love is love" and it should always be respected, they sure feel strongly about making sure everyone conforms to their standards for personal relationships.

Ya think? Very quickly, and to absurdity. For example, who knew that anyone who went out with black supremacist and terrorist Angela Davis was dating the direct descendant of a genocidal white colonialist?

So when California finally passes their reparations bill, will she be a recipient or a payer?

And don't laugh too hard. When the whole trans thing started gaining steam a few years ago, I suggested that it was just a matter of time before refusing the sexual advances of a trans-person would be considered a "hate crime". I'm now guessing that in order to graduate from our more Progressive colleges soon, that will be a requirement.

Funny, that. Last fall a Chick-Fil-A finally opened in my university town. I really expected more of a stink about it from the usually expected suspects. The only hate I noticed was on social media, and it was tepid at best.

The most illustrative post I saw was "Deeply disappointed in my town that nobody has thrown a molotov through the window yet."

Typical modern Progressive; all for political violence, but too chicken and lazy to do it themselves.

Meanwhile 4 months after opening, it's still nearly an hour wait to get a sandwich at the new Chick-Fil-A. Capitalism always triumphs over hate.

I don't think White people are as racist as Blacks may think. Number one, Blacks are only 13 1/2% of the population in the US. From everything you see and hear you'd think Blacks were the majority. They commit over 50% of the murders in this country and all other crimes proportionately. It appears to me, most Whites are afraid of Blacks because of that. Being honest, I would never walk through a Black neighborhood, let alone a Black neighborhood at night. I would have no reservations about walking through a truly White neighborhood anytime. Of all the truly good Blacks, there is a large percentage of criminal element within their race which taints them all. It's not hatred, it's fear, and it's a shame that being such a small percentage of the population (approximately 1 in 10),that a much smaller percentage of them hold the record over every other race in criminality. It is fear more than anything else. After all, who wants to be victimized.
