RIGHT UP YOUR ALLY

The Biden administration is so busy effing things up that it's hard to keep track of them all, but special attention deserves to be called to their refusal to acknowledge Israel as an American ally. And this slight is a lot more than just words (which would be anti-semantic) because Biden still hasn't even placed a phone call to Benjamin Netanyahu to establish, or even acknowledge, a working relationship.

We're not sure, but we suspect that Biden's goal is to sabotage peace in the Middle East just to keep Trump from winning that Nobel Peace Prize.

SCHOOL DAZE

When Joe Biden promised to "follow the science" regarding school reopenings in the pandemic era, we should have realized he was talking about political science rather than good old fashioned science-science. Which is why he's ignoring the CDC's latest pronouncement that schools can and should be reopened safely, and instead is basing his "keep 'em closed" policy on the Teachers Unions' compelling argument that "actual work is for losers who don't make massive contributions to the Democrats."

And although Biden had promised to reopen schools as soon as the science-science allowed, Jen Psaki has now clarified that he defines successful "opening" as 50% of schools offering one day of in-class teaching a week. Considering that the numbers were already slightly better than that, it's a low bar that even Basement Biden can clear.

Billary is a classic. Still makes me laugh.

When the Rs take over again in a few years, they ought to work on getting rid of teachers' unions. Federal employee unions should be easy -- they were established by executive order during JFK, I think.

The coldest I remember it being in this country was -33 in the '60s when I was a student in a one-room-wonder country school with no indoor plumbing and barely any heat. Of course the same conditions prevailed at home, so who noticed? I've gotten pretty soft in the intervening years.

Has the nation's "Newspaper of Record" picked up on the Swalwell story yet? Mention this story to Progressives, and they have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, just like with Hunter Biden.

Our Allies: I am saving this one to toss as a rhetoric grenade the next time some Progressive brings up the efficacy of leading from behind. At least Israel got a solid 4 years of knowing what being an ally is like again before again coming under pressure of having the US re-recognize their capitol by again moving our Israel embassy from Jerusalem to Tehran.

We're not sure, but we suspect that Biden's goal is to sabotage peace in the Middle East just to keep Trump from winning that Nobel Peace Prize.

No need. Trump was never going to get a peace prize, but Biden will certainly qualify just by engendering less peace in the Middle East.

School Daze: I think that conservatives have been missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to act upon the sage advice of one of our adversaries, Rahm Emanuel:

"You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."

As @Stiltion points out, the teachers unions have effectively declared themselves "non-essential" and are content to stay at home and get paid for doing nothing indefinitely. On the other hand, the "essential" economy (which is largely everyone who does not get a paycheck from the government) is stuck with their kids at home doing nothing beyond video games. Not that being in school was all that much better considering that parents have since discovered the sort of propaganda that the public schools have been shovel-feeding their kids for years which will only prove useful in their lives should they consider their careers as daytime basement dwellers and evening vandals for Antifa.

It's time to fire all of them and give the money to their parents as vouchers to be spent on motivated teachers who are at least interested in showing up.

BTW, in my jurisdiction the schools have been open for months and there have been no significant Wuhan Flu outbreaks associated with our primary or secondary schools.

Presidents Day at IHOP: As screwed up as things are, what a gift it's been to live in a country where Hillary was never allowed to be President.

And finally, let's all pray that @Stilton gets to keep his power on:

Frozen wind turbines hamper Texas power output, state's electric grid operator says

Nearly half of Texas' installed wind power generation capacity has been offline because of frozen wind turbines in West Texas, according to Texas grid operators - Rolling blackouts possible amid record demand for energy

Yea green power!

Remember, this is happening in Texas, lest you thought that this phenomenon would only be limited to Progressive-run hell-holes like California!

Welcome back, Dr. Jarlsberg; hope you got some stuff crossed off your to-do list. Even more, I hope your crapple tunnel is healing nicely.

You can bet ol' SloJoe is going to avoid drawing attention to Trump's brokered Israel peace deals as long as possible, hoping people will have forgotten about them by the time his keepers instruct him to take a giant shit on Israel by giving Iran nukes. Do the Dimocrats realize that DC will likely get hit by those same nukes 10 minutes after Israel gets hit?

@Velveeta,

Good thing Biden fired all those pipeline workers so you won't have to endure that global warming anymore.

@John the Econ,
How long before the geniuses that own those windmills will be installing heaters in them (powered by electricity from a coal fired plant)?

Regarding school, I am praying that people finally tell public schools to go pound sand, and seek alternate schooling for their kids. If you are a parent stuck at home trying to school your kids using the public school's terrible handling of internet teaching, you may as well home school without the public school's "help."

In unrelated news, I wrote a nastygram to my "awesome" Senator Burr regarding The United States Senate's supposed lack of authority to prosecute private citizens. I also called him a RINO piece of crap, and said I wished he was running for re-election so I could vote against him this time. I expect black Suburbans to show up at my house any minute now.

Fish Out of Water said...

@Colby Muenster: The reason why Senators such as Burr may exist in NC are the same reason that we the Commonwealth of Virginia are stuck with 2 Senators who only represent the 4 or so "progressives" duchies of Northern Virginia. IOW, they can ignore the rest of the Commonwealth (or give it the middle finger) because that is not where the votes are.

As I have said over and over, this has to change in the Commonwealth and I suspect NC as well.

@Readers- John the econ nailed it; the power has been out here in Texas all day and we're damned cold. It's a bit after 7 p.m. as I talk this into my phone and its pitch black here in the house with temperatures falling.

We have a small propane heater which is theoretically safe to use indoors, but we damn well won't have turned on at night. it doesn't really make the room warm yeah, but makes it more or less survivable which is the goal right now.

We're heading toward record low temperatures plus a new round of snow and ice and it's not unlikely that we will be without power for much of the next several days. So if I don't comment here or post anything new, that's why.

Be well, be warm, and be safe! And think warm thoughts about your friends in Texas and across the country during these cold and dark times. And I'm not just talking about the weather.

Velveeta Processed Cheese Food said...

@At Stilt: Sounds like things are worse there. At least up my way we're prepared for such weather. Tough on folks who have to work outdoors, although I never seemed to mind it that much when that was my lot. My baby sister and her family are calving out 700 cows, but they at least are able to do it under cover.
Supposed to be -25 Tuesday morning, but "much warmer" with a forecast high of +1.
Hunker down and survive; we need you.

Because of the blackouts here in crazy California and our need for medical devices, we invested in a whole house generator that starts automatically and runs off of natural gas. We can run the heat or A/C and everything for as long as needed. I think you can get them that run on other fuels as well. We won't have to call anyone to bring us a generator and hook us up at dark o'clock anymore.
Gives us a lot of peace of mind.

JustaJeepGuy said...

I just saw that in California they have gathered over 1.5 million signatures to recall Gavin Newsom but suddenly, signature verification is the most important thing ever. Isn't it funny how it wasn't important at all when electing a President to verify sigs but now it is?

Remember how Californians kicked (Demo_Rat) Gray Davis out back in '92 or '93 and elected Ah-nold governor? He turned out to be a RINO, but he was still a bit better than a Demo_Rat.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Readers- well, we're still screwed in Texas. We get about a half hour of power and Heat once every 8 or 9 hours. The rest of the time we're in Siberia. Conditions are expected to get worse with a new winter storm system on Wednesday. Possibly no relief until Saturday.

I won't be posting but I'm surviving.

Apparently we'd be okay now if we were getting power from the various coal-powered plants in Texas that were closed under Obama and Biden. There's a lesson here for the rest of the country and I hope they're paying attention.

John the Econ said...

Glad to see you're still with us, @Stilton. Stay warm as you can.

"There's a lesson here for the rest of the country and I hope they're paying attention."

I don't know. California has been living with this for some time now, and it doesn't seem to have put the brakes on their green delusion, yet. No doubt that many of the Californians who moved to Texas this year thinking that they had escaped Californiaism are thinking "WTF?!?!?!".

Living over 1,000 miles further north of normally temperate Texas, one of my biggest homeowner concerns is an extended electrical failure during colder weather like we've had over the last week. Years ago, Mrs. Econ questioned the wisdom of my spending $800 on a generator that I can run off propane or gasoline that for the most part sits inert in the garage. Even though we have yet to need it, she now thinks I'm a genius.

@Joseph ET said, "we invested in a whole house generator that starts automatically and runs off of natural gas. We can run the heat or A/C and everything for as long as needed."

I've long considered doing the same. But you do realize, don't you, that the next target of the eco-fascist-Progressives is your natural gas supply?

Phasing out natural gas-fired electric power generation by 2030 is bedrock dogma in the Green New Deal. In fact, it’s become an unholy crusade. So it should be no surprise that climate alarmists would jump at the chance to ban new natural gas lines. Many other cities in California have already followed Berkeley’s lead, as has Bellingham, Washington. More gas bans are in the offing nationwide. Connecticut lawmakers actually want a law that would pressure insurers to stop insuring homes that have gas appliances or heating systems!!

@Colby Muenster asked, "How long before the geniuses that own those windmills will be installing heaters in them (powered by electricity from a coal fired plant)?"

Where I live, solar panels are usually covered by snow continually between the middle of December to the middle of March. Recently, someone actually asked me, "Why don't they put heating elements in solar panels". Just add this to the list of reasons why I think that public schools should be closed permanently.

But if you think the situation is bad now, just wait until we all have electric cars to charge! It will be like waiting in the gas lines of the '70s, but better because you won't even have to leave your home.

But I did do a double-take on this topic this morning: I frequently have Bloomberg TV on for the business news while working. Of course, Bloomberg's founder, owner, and former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg is famous for commuting most weekends in his private jet off to his private island in Bermuda after a busy week of lecturing soccer moms over the need to surrender their minivans and lifestyles to save the planet. Over the last several months, I've concluded that Bloomberg hosts, interviewers and reporters are now paid on the basis of how many times they can insert "climate change" or "climate crisis" into each story or interview, not matter how irrelevant it might be at the moment.

So when the story of the power fail in Texas came up, I really didn't expect a lot of talk about frozen windmills and useless solar panels. But it did, with the host actually asking:

Are we really ready to put this much risk in one basket?

The answer is so obvious that only an eco-Progressive could miss it.

Shelly said...

I live in the near vicinity of you, Stilt, and have experienced the same blackouts. In the last 36 hours, I've had power only sporadically, mostly in the middle of the night. And my gas fireplace isn't working. So it's been rough for a 74 year old single woman. I'm glad I held on to some of my "fat" clothes as I've got on about four layers. Right now we have power but I'm not holding my breath. It's already up to 47 in the house!

Rod said...

I don't need to use them very often; but three of the more significant tools I bought long time ago when could first afford them, and will never go without are: Chain saw, Shotgun, Rifle. And they remain well-maintained & working. There are of course others; but those were first. Little or common stuff like water jugs, hand tools, knives, rope, fuel, oil, ammo go along with that.

In Texas (hardly designed for and most not trained nor used to this) I wonder how many people left the water running at their places (more then required to prevent freeze); but then left the place when the power failed.

Dan said...

@Joseph ET Yup, whole house gennie here, too. Hurricanes and other storms are our biggest concerns here in coastal Georgia as opposed to snow and ice and below freezing temps.

No natural gas, so have it hooked up to propane. Should be good for running for a few days when needed.

@Everyone. I'm praying you'll get the power back up soon. I really like electricity and wouldn't want to go long without it.

@Readers- we are still hanging in as of Wednesday morning. Electricity comes and goes but it's been on for a couple of hours now. Probably won't last but it's always nice to add a few more degrees to the ambient room temperature.

Still no internet, cable TV, or landline phone service, so we're feeling pretty isolated. Still, some people have been without power for over 60 hours so compared to them we're doing fine. Carry on!

John the Econ said...

Probably won't last but it's always nice to add a few more degrees to the ambient room temperature.

Kinda how I feel about the America I once knew.

Again on Bloomberg: The people who are paid to hype the climate crisis are again caught expressing doubts. While discussing the news about Ford's announcement that all cars they sell in Europe by 2030 will be electric, the commentators went off the narrative rails by commenting about how well that would work out for people when the lights have literally gone out.

At least if the power went out in your house, you used to be able to go get in your car and warm up there.

Red Alert, Mike! Your people who don't have private jets to take them to private islands in Bermuda are losing faith!

My thoughts on Rush and what he meant for our country and for all of us will be the first thing I address at such time as I can get back online.

Colby Muenster said...

@Stilton,
Here's praying and hoping your power stays on!

@John the Econ,

Why do I think that Ford will start backing off of this statement along about 2025? They will ultimately build what sells, and there is no way Europe will be prepared to go fully electric in nine years. Granted, gasoline is horribly expensive in Europe, but so is electricity, food, housing, booze and damn near everything else.

I was not aware of Rush Limbaugh's passing until just now. I am deeply saddened by this news, but at the same time angered by the assumption that there are millions of liberals now celebrating. Then again, I have to ask myself, would I celebrate (at least in private) if Joy Behar or Joe Scarborough croaked? Not that either of these turds compare to El Rushbo! He used actual facts in his commentary.

3M,

Mark Steyn would be a fantastic replacement.

Rod said...

Class acts all the way. For those who were not tuned in to the radio show: Rush's wife came on the show first this morning and very graciously, personally told the radio audience the news. Major media did not have it yet. Good people; big loss.

Gonzo'57 said...

Stilt,

You folks in Texas need to take ERCOT in hand and demand that Texas ties into the national power grid. Ludacris to not have interties through which power can be purchased and shipped from other utilities. Probably couldn't buy enough power for everybody who's out but probably could help a great deal of cold folks.

Sad to see Rush gone. Steyn would be the logical person to take the torch and run with it. As far as liberals celebrating his death it wouldn't surprise me. But then again, I did a happy little jig years ago when T. Kennedy passed and more recently when R.G.B shuffled off this mortal coil. There's a long list of others whose passing would delight me to no end.

Sortahwitte said...

The meeting of the old farts mob for coffee this morning went off ok even though we had about and additional 5 inches of snow overnight. We're in single digits, but things (such as temp) are looking up. As you can imagine we cussed and discussed all things energy. The refinery where we all used to work was shut down last week in the energy curtailment fiasco. Propane is the "go to" fuel for rural Oklahoma. You can't heat a rural home or business with wind farts. So, did you know that propane is a product of the oil refining business? Most people don't. Also, lubricating oil for wind turbines is a product of oil refining. Just bitching and moaning. Seems like everyone in dc and okc have their head up their ass.

Stilt, I sincerely pray that all things get fixed at your place. My eldest daughter and her family are not too many miles from your palatial digs. Who would have thought.

John the Econ said...

@M. Mitchell Marmel, I'd enjoy that. Steyn has an international outlook that is lacking in most conservative media. In a world where most media celebrities talk of fantasies of living anywhere else, Steyn is someone who has lived elsewhere and still believes that America we believe in is the promised land.

@Colby Muenster, the beauty of such statements is that they're largely meaningless and Ford can back off at any time. I doubt they really believe this themselves, but all the cool kids are saying it and no doubt they have every expectation that the Democrats will be handing out billions of dollars in "incentives" over the next 2-to-4 years that they otherwise might miss out on. So it costs little to play along until the obvious becomes more obvious and they keep on making ICE-powered vehicles beyond 2030.

And no, I wouldn't celebrate should I hear news of Joy Behar or Joe Scarborough passing. I just wouldn't consider it that much a loss to society. What really pisses off these people are that Limbaugh changed an industry, and will be remember far longer than other will be.

Why is there an ERCOT?: @Gonzo'57, there's a very good reason that ERCOT is not tied into the other national grids. In fact, it's the very reason that ERCOT exists in the first place. Since (with a couple of exceptions) Texas's power is almost exclusively produced and consumed within the state, Texas is free from federal interference and control over its grid. If Texas were to fully interconnect beyond state lines, it would just be a matter of time before they became California.

Speaking of the suffering a blackout: From AOC last night:

The infrastructure failures in Texas are quite literally what happens when you *don’t* pursue a Green New Deal.

Yeah, AOC. Because if only Texas had ten-times the frozen windmills not spinning or ten-times the solar panels covered in snow, there would have been more than enough electricity to go around.

Volume!

Hurricanes result in annual power outages here. It sure makes life simpler.

I, too, will miss El Rushbo. Let the progressive vent and rage. It's all they have. None of them have the intellect, patriotism, or political insight that he carried in his little finger. I like Mark as well, but don't know of anyone who can come close to filling his shoes.
