A Penny For Your Thoughts

johnny optimism, medical, humor, sick, jokes, boy, wheelchair, doctors, hospital, stilton jarlsberg, penny, lance, death, grief

In the past, I have promised daughter Jarlsberg that nothing bad will ever, ever, ever happen to Lance. Which is why today I envy Johnny so very, very much.

Cancer struck Penny so subtly that no one could quite figure out what it was. But within the space of a couple of weeks, it manifested itself in multiple ways and the rapid progression couldn't be stopped.

A very hard day for the Jarlsberg family. Hug 'em if you got 'em.

Penny, dog, death, loved, missed, grief, agony

Rest in Peace, Penny (The Official Dog of Hope n' Change) 2013-2021

I think my wife could embark again on the adventure of another dog. I've buried too many, and the thought of doing so again is not pleasant. They are a loved part of the family, and their loss is as painful as the loss of any other member of the family.

Our condolences sir. Dogs, especially when allowed to spend time indoors with the rest of the family really become attached to us. Cats are usually a little more aloof (until they are hungry, lol), but dogs like to hand around and spend quality time with their human.

The void they leave when they pass on is felt. Hope the weekend has better news.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I’m sorry for your loss, and I empathize with your pain. One of the saddest things I ever did was put down my 12-year old Weimaraner Kristi, who was suffering from kidney failure. Now I’m dreading the same action, as my 13-year old Weimaraner Shotzie suffers from slipped discs. She would not survive surgery, so when the meds stop working in the months ahead, her time with us will end.
There is no love on earth (with the exception of Jesus) like the love a dog has for its master. If you question this, try this experiment:
Get two cars. Lock your dog in the trunk of one, and your spouse in the trunk of the other. Two hours later let them both out, and see which one I covers you with love and kisses…A dog will always love you unconditionally.

Just copying and pasting from my comment over at Johnny's today....

Only a dog lover can understand what you and your family are going through now.
I've often said that one of life's worst realities is that dogs do not live nearly long enough, and perhaps people live too long.....

So, so sorry Stilton.

Snark said...

I'm sorry for the loss of your Penny. Our furry children bring us so much joy and comfort while asking so little in return. Their unconditional love is what breaks our heart when they go. I lost a dear red headed cat two years ago who would be in my lap the instant I sat down and slept under my arm with his head on my shoulder every night. I held him on my lap as he left me. We'll all cross that Rainbow Bridge some day.

Rod said...

Yes, this hurts, a lot. My parents lived in the county with rural property and they had a sort of rustic garden spot where they had buried several pets over the years. I THINK it helped them a lot at the time when I had a memorial granite stone made for that place with their names and "Good Friends". Dad then especially hung on to a large dog that later became so ill it had to be put down, but that was not as timely as it should have been. It required sneaky intervention by others; and that was a rough period. But after that they would not get another pet because they didn't want another such loss; and I think another MAY have been good for a while under more oversight. Only if they were able to take good care of the animal. It seems cats would do better then dogs then. When my folks got very much older, both eventually making it well into their 90's and Mom had to move to care facility in town but Dad would not; pets were clearly no longer a good idea. We do what we can and hope it's right. Condolences to you all Stilt.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. It sucks. It sucks big time.

Dogs have the purest love, aside from God Almighty. If I did not have my pack, with the way the world is going, I would be stark barking mad.

My heart aches for your family's heartache. I pray you will be comforted, and that, in time, the good memories will bring more smiles than tears.

Let me add our condolences from our home to yours. May God bless you and yours.

I held on OK until Anonymous' rainbow bridge post. Then my eyes started to leak and kept doing so until I started typing this.

The loss of our ferrets still can bring an ache to my heart. I'm not sure if our critters have and immortal soul, but if we keep our thoughts with us after we die, I can be sure our critters will be there with us.

Now excuse me -- I have to blow my nose and wipe my glasses again.

Stilt, my thoughts are with you and your family as you transition to a new chapter of your life without Penny at your side. Hopefully this poem written by a friend will comfort you as it did me back when.

When Angels sing
And I’m sure they must
They shed upon us Angel Dust

It lets us see, what Angels see
A glimpse into Eternity

It lights the sky
Along the way
Leading dogs to Heaven
Where they’re welcome to stay.

And doze upon a blanket warm
Waiting for their Master’s arm

To reach across a span of years
And once again
Scratch their ears.

So sorry for your loss. I know so well what your are going through.
I'm crying now in memory of two of my four legged sons gone in less than a year. Reilly was the picture of health, one day chasing cars along the top of our street side retaining wall, the next day nearly comatose with what we learned was massive kidney and liver failure. I think he found a deadly mushroom in the yard that I missed in regular scan.
Almost a year later while on a walk, my Bentley slipped his leash and caught a slowly passing car. He passed in my arms doing 80 mph on way to vet.
I pray that your Penny has found new and old friends at the Rainbow Bridge.

I cannot add anything profound other than to say I also have been there, and am getting close to the time I will have to do what needs done for Heeler Dog as he is getting close to following his predecessor. He is a cowboy's dog, and he is just as broken and healed as this old cowboy is.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Readers- Your comments keep coming and I promise you that every one counts. Don't worry about what the exact words are...this is mostly "group hug" time. And yes, it doesn't help that it already seemed like the world was heading to hell in a handbasket. I sometimes said that Penny had a quality I called "communicable zen;" I could just lay a hand on her and feel in the moment and at peace.

I'm telling myself that the pain my family is feeling now is the pain that Penny didn't have to suffer in the final stages of her illness. Which is a nice thought, but I feel like I'm rationalizing and playing word games. A favorite saying of mine is "cleverness is serviceable for everything, sufficient for nothing." That feels really true today.

What DOES help is your collective friendship and humanity. Thank you.

Sorry for your loss, Stilt. Having lost dogs while growing up and cats as an independent adult, I know much it hurts. I am hoping to relocate to another state sometime this year or next, so I am not getting anybody new right now. After the move, maybe I'll try fish, so as not to form too much of a bond.

I am so sorry for your loss. My Pit Bull, "Punky", will be 10 years old next March 3rd. She has been such a comfort to me since my "child bride" (14 years younger that me) died April 29, 2019. Punky still almost daily goes to her bedroom & lays next to her bed. If Punky were not with me, I would be alone (except for G-d) in my house. When Punky goes, I honestly don't know if I will get another doggie (I'm 72).

Cling to the good memories, chaver, and Shalom Aleichem.

We rescue dogs as we progress through the years and have had many dogs. We take mutts pure breads and just about any dog under 5 or 6. So we have suffered a lot of lose and know exactly how you feel. It’s a hole that takes a long time to heal. But somehow we manage to move on and when the time is right, we get another one. So be kind to yourselves and take your time to grieve the loss. Our las one before our current one was just a heart breaker. It took almost two years to get another rescue. She’s a pit mutt and as sweet as can be. She was completely shut down and a puddle when we got her. She was 10 months old and was seized for cruelty. She was a broken dog. Now she’s a doll and loves everyone, even has her very own cat. So take a break and there will be another needy nose waiting to became a Jarlsberg dog when your ready. JZ

Stilton, I am so sorry for you and your family's loss. Having been there several times, the hurt and loss, if anything, grows stronger. After a time of grief I have always (except for last time) found a new puppy. This last time I bought a year old German Shepherd. Buddy. from a young man who said he "didn't have time for him" but didn't explain that very well to Buddy. It took several months to convince Buddy that he hadn't been dognapped and that I wasn't planning to hurt him. He finally relaxed and accepted our family as his. I hope for you that you will one day bring another furry friend into the Jarlsberg Family

My condolences Mr. J. I'm pretty sure I know how you're feeling - I just lost mine last week and, as always. it is the shits.
To our pets, we are immortal Gods. They devote their lives to giving us unconditional love, joy and happiness. All we have to do is feed them, walk them (for us city types) and love them back which is so very easy to do. I know I can never be angry when I'm around animals and I prefer their company to humans almost always.
I still have one scrawny black cat that seems to be just a little too comfortable being the last man standing - for now - I still have enough in me to open pet food long enough for another kick at the can. 12-years from now I'll be pushing 80 and hopefully there's a 12 year old dog laying on the couch beside me while I type you another fan letter.
