Shoot du Jour

stilton’s place, stilton, political, humor, conservative, cartoons, jokes, hope n’ change, allen premium outlets mall, allen, shooter, texas

I live about 15 minutes away from the Allen Premium Outlets mall, where a deranged shooter went on a killing spree Saturday. Do I shop there often? No. Have I shopped there in the past? Yes.

Sadly, there really does seem to be a mass shooting almost every day now. People scramble for information to try to make sense of these tragedies while talking heads who really don't have a clue feel called upon to pontificate. Including me, it now seems.

As of this writing on Sunday morning the body count stands at nine dead (including the shooter) and seven more wounded. Or not - the news reports vary.  Victims range in age from 5 to 61. And there are appalling details that I have no intention of sharing here.

I'd like to say that no one I know was hurt or killed, but I actually won't really know that until the victims' names are released.

Meanwhile, like everyone else, I'm trying to piece together a story based on very incomplete and perhaps inaccurate information. We're told that the shooter was in his 30s and lived with his parents. It was reported that police requested a translator to talk to the shooter's parents, so we can assume that they (and he) weren't "from around here," as we say in Texas. Of course, ascribing any importance to that fact would label me xenophobic and bigoted, so I certainly won't do that. Nor will I speculate on whether the distinctive tattoo on the back of one of the killer's hands might be some sort of gang sign.  For all I know, it's just a bar code applied when these lunatics roll off the assembly line.

Neighbors called the shooter "quiet" and "a loner," which comes as no great shock. He frequently wore the clothing of a security guard - but who knows if that was avocation or affectation? Had he worked at the shopping outlet? Was there a reason in his mind for this time, this place, and these people? I don't know. But I feel a need to know, as if an "aha!" moment will tell me how to ensure the safety of family, friends, and myself in the future. Which is a fool's errand; you can't outthink madness and evil.

So my thoughts ramble. I think about the young marine on a subway who took steps to subdue a man threatening violence to others and is now likely facing a charge of murder. And I wonder if this is going to dissuade possible heroes from coming to the aid of others in the future.

I don't want to waste time talking about guns. Guns, when used like this, are terrible tools rather than the actual problem. Mental illness is a problem. Isolation is a problem. Cultural degradation is a problem. The celebration of violence (I'm looking at you, John Wick) is a problem. The orchestrated pitting of one citizen against another is a problem. And our nation's loss of social and spiritual values is at the heart of it all.

In other words, I have nothing new to say and no magical insights. But I can confidently speculate that politics and politicians can have no positive impact on this nightmare. It is the soul of our nation that needs repair and real change will require a cultural shift that I can't even imagine. But I can damn well hope for it.

UPDATE

We know a little more now. The shooter was a 33-year-old Hispanic who was licensed as a security guard between 2016 and 2020 although sources aren't saying if he ever worked at the mall. CNN has predictably reported (in headline-sized type) "INVESTIGATORS PROBE POSSIBLE LINK TO RIGHT-WING EXTREMISM." The "possible link" being an insignia on the shooter's shirt saying "RWDS" which, according to the totally unbiased Southern Poverty Law Center, might stand for "Right Wing Death Squad," a group of bloodthirsty Conservative terrorists whose secret conspiratorial plans have only been thwarted to date because of their taste for matching embroidered polo shirts.

There has also been speculation that the tattoo on the shooter's hand represents the Hispanic "Tango Blast" gang based in Houston, although it is said to also be popular ornamentation for those in the Hip-Hop community.

And Right Wingers, of course.

Thinking of you, Stilton. Watching from abroad, the rate of mad shootings like this is astounding; used'ta be, folks in the States would see if we were OK after a terror attack - now it's reversed: an old pal lives in Grapevine and I contacted her to check in.

Being rhetoric again, have CNN and like lower media/social lifeforms ever stop to think how using tragedies such as this latest to advance a dubious agenda utterly desecrates and dishonors the lives of the victims? And to answer myself, 'No, they probably haven't. Their cravenness and amoral compasses do not allow them to do such reflection'.

As with other cowardly mass murders, as more information becomes available, I believe we'll see another very troubled individual who should have been under care or monitored and should not have had access to firearms. Governor Abbott put it well that the true issue is mental health, not guns.

Saw a meme recently which describes the folly of gun control well. It goes something like this: 'When Cain murdered Abel, God did not take away rocks.'

"And I wonder if this is going to dissuade possible heroes from coming to the aid of others in the future."

The saying I have heard is heroes rush in when others rush out. So there is no need to wonder what effect charging a hero with murder will have on other possible heroes. It will dissuade them from doing what needs done, and again the innocent will pay. I believe that is part of the agenda of destruction of this country. The political machine, BOTH sides of the aisle, have created a "solution" and then desperately done everything in their power to create the problem to solve. While they are busy erasing and re-writing history to fit their narrative, while they are busy generating racial divide and hatred, while they are busy trying to figure out what pronoun and gender they wish to be today, while they whine about tolerance and intolerantly cancel anyone who does not agree with them, while they protest the justified killing of a criminal and deify them they scream that the murder of their unborn children is a right. The list could go on for pages!

The only way for this to change at this point is by watering this country's tree of liberty, but even that is pretty well fruitless at this point as most of the population has become complacent and are too willing to let someone else do the heavy lifting. And the few who do try to make this country great again will be quickly snuffed out by the ruling elite.

I am only glad I am old enough to remember what was and still do my best to proudly live that way, and what will likely never be again, and feel pity for those who will grow up in a country that should be ashamed to wear the name it does.

This is certainly a tragedy for those who are the victims of this senseless attack. We see the gory details splashed all over the news with renewed cries for gun control etc. What we never see are the murders almost identical to this that occur every day in the south side of Chicago, LA, New York City and every other metro area where gunfire is all too common. This does not lessen this event in any way I am just pointing out that we have a media obsessed with violent events like this and yet they ignore the constant carnage in our urban areas by those people who live there.

I think in many ways, the increase in these events is tied directly to the publicity that they get. I also think that the folks who want to have absolute gun control and the media who support them are well aware of this and this is why shootings like this get so much headline space. This is to advance their anti gun agenda. If this gun was legally owned it will only make their case even more.

We live in emotionally stressful times. Our nation is in a crisis as far as the national mood goes. The policies of the administration are not calming things and are actually making this worse. This is probably intentional by the puppet masters who are running things because Biden sure can't comprehend nor could be organize such a complex project as we have running right now in the federal government as far as all the fracturing policies go. This stress being put upon our society is affecting all of us and a very small percentage are reacting to this gloomy environment with violent actions such as this shooting. Until we start to heal the nation by restoring a positive attitude and we see forward movement of our economy and society we will continue to witness horrors like this.

I am not saying that a lousy economy, porous borders and the moral disintegration of our schools and institutions is a reasonable excuse to shoot a bunch of people. I am merely suggesting that some individuals who are under stress emotionally may be triggered to act out in violent ways when they finally lose all hope and snap psychologically. An economic upswing and stabilization of our social disputes would go a long way towards curbing these violent events.

And what none of the "news" services are saying is once again, this shooting took place in a Gun-Free Zone.

To what Igor and M. Mitchell Marmel said, I'd add "Stay out of Gun-Free Zones."

Dick Lowman said...

Strange coincidence. All these recent radically expanding mass shootings just happen to play into the hands of those 3-letter agencies who are lusting for an excuse to take our guns away. The same agencies that (by coincidence, of course) just happen to have a 60 year history of developing mind control. And the shooters seem all to have a psychological profile that could be easily controlled. How strange.

So you go for it, CNN! You jump on the possibility that this Hispanic person, who may or may not be in our country legally, whose parents need Spanish speaking interpreters in order to be interviewed, you run with the idea that he's a member of a right-wing white supremacist organization.

When he applied to join the scary RWDS, what do you suppose their reaction would have been when they saw he was brown skinned? Or that he had a tat of a street gang prominently displayed on the back of his hand.

Go for it, CNN. Don't let logical critical thinking get in the way of your leftist slant.

re: the tattoo on his hand - a couple of alternate comments...

1. It resembles the City of Dallas logo. Many gangs use a symbol to "represent' - that is, to show what area they claim as their own.

2. "A tattoo on his left hand can be seen and some believe this to be related to the mark of the Pure Tango Blast gang.

The gang Is made up of mainly Hispanic members and is known to exist in a number of major Texas cities including Dallas."

Texas Mall Shooter

But the tattoo is picking at nits. The basic issue is that people who have something wrong with them - mental illness, isolation, cultural degradation, just plain evil, whatever... - will find a way to hurt others regardless of whatever laws are passed. Case in point: yesterday someone drove an SUV into a bus stop at Brownsville TX and killed 8 people.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

"Sadly, there really does seem to be a mass shooting almost every day now. People scramble for information to try to make sense of these tragedies while talking heads who really don't have a clue feel called upon to pontificate."

Peak narcissism.

As for who he was and his motivations, we'll get a good clue about that as soon as this gets flushed down the memory hole, along with all of the other shooters and shootings that don't contribute positively to the Progressive narratives.

Not that they'll try to score some ideological points before it is flushed town the memory hole; I just heard Bloomberg report the speculation that authorities are trying to link the shooter to white supremacy. Never let a crisis go to waste.

As for the NYC subway incident: Do note that the same Progressives who wish to force us all out of our automobiles and onto mass transit are also totally cool with allowing psychopaths to roam freely on the trains to molest helpless commuters.

I think "cultural degradation" is the biggest problem. I think the "mental health crisis" is largely fed by a culture that now cultivates and encourages the worst of human tendencies. And inevitably that includes murder. People mindless say "We need to address mental health", but exactly what does that mean? Spend billions of dollars on "mental health professionals" who can no longer bring themselves to say out loud the differences between men and women?

"The celebration of violence (I'm looking at you, John Wick) is a problem. The orchestrated pitting of one citizen against another is a problem. And our nation's loss of social and spiritual values is at the heart of it all."

Amen. Progressives like to defend popular media by arguing that there is "no consensus" on how endless hours of violent and anti-social content affect on society, I like to remind people that we have an entire media complex devoted to manipulating people's behavior, called "marketing". These people would not be spending billions of dollars a year on affecting people's behavior via media if they didn't think that it worked.

Mrs. Econ & I were discussing "social isolation" over the weekend. I find it among the world's ultimate ironies that with a population of now over 8-billion people, "loneliness" and "isolation" is now officially recognized as a crisis. That most of these people resort to virtual online "friends" just makes the situation worse.

Oh, and speaking of being "xenophobic and bigoted": Do you find disgusting smells disgusting? Then you are officially a racist xenophobe!

Hate the smell of BO? You might be xenophobic: Bizarre study finds people who are sensitive to disgusting smells are more likely to have negative attitudes towards migrants

"Disgust at the smell of faeces, sweat and urine may be linked to xenophobia
Scientists claim that steering clear of disgusting smells is a natural mechanism
But when that works into overdrive it could trigger hostility towards refugees"

Carry on, fellow bigots!

I'm afraid that this horrible, horrible trend of shootings is simply another symptom of our country's and our culture's circling the drain....as others above have commented. I truly can't imagine who amongst our citizens cannot see that we are living in a late-stage of decline, post-constitutional, failing republic. The parallels to Rome are glaring. Bread and circuses indeed.

I'll leave with a pertinent quote from one of my favorite authors. Forgive me if it's a repeat from previous posting....it comes to mind a lot lately.

SO glad not to have to defend my front porch just yet.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Dave- I think we're having a perfect storm of communicable madness and despair, caused by things both intentional and accidental. But to beat the "storm" analogy to death, I don't know if this is cultural "weather" or long-term "climate change." I fear that it's the latter.

@Igor- The good news is that I'm such a hermit I'm almost never in crowds or crowded places. And while it wouldn't be as effective as "a good guy with a gun," I think I'm going to get back in the habit of carrying my large, lock blade pocket knife.

@dj- You've got a lot going on here and I'm going to have to honestly say that I'm skeptical about almost all of it. Does that make me right and you wrong? Nope. So many "conspiracies" have been proven factual in the last couple of years that I'd be a fool to close the doors of possibility.

@Mike aka Proof- I'm pretty sure that CNN knew that if the shooter's parents can't speak English very well, their son was unlikely to be a White Power extremist. But that's the accusation they made in big bold type for those who only skim articles. The f*ckers.

@Stevarooni- Very well put.

@Fish Out of Water- The whole issue of mental health care is huge and is going to be a nightmare to tackle (if anyone even tries). Half of the country already thinks the other half is dangerously crazy. Children are being sexually mutilated in the name of liberalism, Men who think they're women dominate women's sports, the homeless (frequently with deep mental problems) are being granted "property rights" to anyplace where they care to pitch a tent (in parks, sidewalks, private property).

I'm not a religious guy, but we're not going to solve these problems with an army of publically-funded therapists. We need a spiritual revolution (and yes, it could be non-denominational or even secular) to change what is going on in peoples' hearts and minds. Not brainwashing or indoctrination, but sucking the poison out of the wounds modern life is inflicting on everyone.

@Bobo the Hobo- Great observation. When do we get to rest and recover between emergencies? Unless we turn off all media and isolate ourselves, we can't.

@Wayne in Indiana- As I said above, I'm not religious...but I'll admit that this would be a really good time for a flaming sword to appear in the sky as the rules are explained one last time.

@American Cowboy- Accurate and eloquent. Hardly a rant!

@M. Mitchell Marmel- Practice situational awareness with a dash of paranoia.

@Becky LW- Great point. The huge body counts in Chicago don't even make the news anymore. They're as regular and predictable as the spouting of Old Faithful and, sadly, seem to be accepted as a complete "natural phenomenon" just like the geyser.

You make a lot of excellent points in your comment. Thank you!

@rickn8or- How about a truth in labeling law that forces establishments to take down their "Gun-Free Zone" signs and replace them with "No Defense Zone" signs?

@Dick Lowman- I don't know how much those agencies control events or just how skilled they are at using them opportunistically. But I hold all of those 3-letter agencies in abject distaste. They are enemies of freedom and it genuinely hurts for me to say that.

@Anonymous- I think we're all just trying to figure things out. And I think it's good to get a spectrum of opinions.

@Murphy(AZ)- The RWDS interpretation makes me crazy. CNN is looking at this situation and asking themselves "how can we make this worse? How can we make people even more fearful and combative?" They disgust me.

As you may know, I live in your vicinity and have shopped at the Allen Outlet Mall a number of times. I know you pay more attention when it's close to you, but I am having a hard time with it because I can visualize the place having been there. It makes me wonder if I'm going to be met with a blast of gunfire pushing my cart out of Walmart. To make matters even worse, the Frisco ISD, where my special needs grandaughter is in high school, received terroristic threats this morning so she was kept home from school. This is utter madness.

As a christian, I believe what I am about to say is true. Much of the news media, of which i am a member, will vilify me. Too bad. This is what I believe is true.
We are in the midst of a great battle, in a world we cannot see. The battle is in the spiritual world, and we humans are the pawns in this great chess game between God and the evil one.
At the present moment, the devil seems to have the upper hand. But as The Bible says, The weapons of our warfare are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds.
We as a people, in America, have turned our faces away from God, and are following the enemy. We are being lead astray by many of my fellow newscasters. We have been teaching our viewers, and in my case, listeners, the message of the left. (Read; International Communist conspiracy - and yes there is one)
We as a people need to turn our faces toward a loving god, and teach our children to do so also. We in the 5th estate need to start realizing that in our callow innocence, we are handing our country over to the devil, and we don't even know it.
OK. End of sermon. But I do hope and pray that at least one of my fellow news people hear and comply. I hope that one family will turn from being dupes of the television, and return to the God of their fathers. Then perhaps we can see an end to troubled people making mothers cry.

Stilton Jarlsberg said...

@Anonymous- If "Gun-Free Zone" signs worked, couldn't all people be made safe by wearing "I'm Bulletproof" signs?

@CenTexTim- Now that you mention it, the tattoo DOES look something like the City of Dallas logo. But as you say, its meaning is nit-picking as we try to draw too big conclusions from too little evidence. And the incident in Brownsville, Texas knocked the stuffing out of me too. In terms of loss of life and injuries, it's almost identical to the Allen massacre...and as you point out, a car was the weapon of choice (assuming the incident was deliberate, which is still unclear at this point).

@John the Econ- Great thoughts, top to bottom. And how did I miss the story that it's bigoted to be bothered if someone smells like a festering corpse in an outhouse? Now THAT is a cartoon that screams to be done.

@rickn8or- Why should the mall stop at "No Weapons"? They should show full commitment and strip their sidewalks clean then post "No Shelter" signs.

@Fred Ciampi- On behalf of the Catholic Church, Biden is apologizing for Mass shootings.

@TrickyRicky- Cormac McCarthy is one helluva writer. And he's right.

@Mesquite Country- At last count, I believe there are 700,000 (ahem) "immigrants" waiting to storm our border in the coming weeks. Good thing Joe Biden has reduced illegal immigration by 90%, huh?

@Shelly- Sadly, I think about active shooter scenarios pretty much any time I'm at the store. How far am I from exit doors? What's in my vicinity that could offer defense or be turned to a weapon? It shouldn't be that way.

And it especially hurts to think about your granddaughter and other kids who we have to worry about whenever they're not with us. I sincerely hope that whoever made the terroristic threat gets caught and is punished severely as a warning to others.

We are living in the last days and are seeing the prophecies of the end times come to pass. It is all there in the Bible, but the Bible is foolishness to unbelievers, and yet here we are! Does this not sound like the days we live in?

1Co_1:18  For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1Co_1:21  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
1Co_1:23  But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
1Co_1:25  Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
1Co_2:14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1Co_3:19  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
2Ti 3:1  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2Ti 3:2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2Ti 3:3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
2Ti 3:4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
2Ti 3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Isa 5:20  Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Isa 5:21  Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Speaking of gangs: just wondering, but why would a gang made of Hispanics use an English Acronym for their name? Wouldn't it be something in Spanish?

And if this guy did actually have Nazi leanings ... will the media EVER wake up to the reality that Nazis were left wingers? National Socialists m'kay? Not right wing extremism.

And wondering if the mall's gun free zone policy only applied to within the mall itself. As far as I can tell, shooter was in the parking lot the whole time. So let's not unfairly convict him of a policy violation.
